In Italy, licensing fees for famous artworks are an important source of income for Italian museums, and Italian law says that museums owning famous public domain works hold the copyright on those works forever and can control who is allowed to make copies and derivative works of them.  Therefore, Italy is forcing the world to cancel the legal concept of public domain.
